There are few bands in modern punk that have managed to stay as scrappy, sincere, and sonically sharp as Joyce Manor. For over a decade, the Southern California quartet has existed in that rare space of basement-show gravity and deep stage command. The band has seemed to never abandon the intimacy that made them essential in the first place. From Torrance to ultimate take off Joyce Manor formed in 2008 in Torrance, California. Founded by vocalist and guitarist Barry Johnson and guitarist Chase Knobbe and bassist Matt Ebert. Named after a failed housing project, the band emerged from the fertile DIY punk scene that surrounded Los Angeles in the late 2000s.

Their latest album, I Used to Go to This Bar, seems like a reflective continuation of that legacy. Where earlier records thrived on youthful restlessness, this release leans into nostalgia without any lost momentum. The songs are still concise. Still melodically immediate, but there is a noticeable depth in tone. There’s a sense of looking back without romanticizing the past. The guitars shimmer with clarity while retaining their signature edge, and the rhythm section drives each track forward with disciplined urgency. The album mirrors the spirit of their early takeoff. With tight structures, unforgettable hooks, and emotional transparency. It also carries the weight of time . The understanding that growing up does not mean growing distant from the feelings that first inspired you to pick up a guitar. In many ways, the record seems like revisiting a familiar street years later and recognizing both what has changed and what stubbornly remains.

As excitement builds for their upcoming tour, anticipation surrounds how these new songs will translate live. No doubt a setting where Joyce Manor have always thrived. Their shows are famously kinetic. Consisting of minimal stage banter, and maximal release. Songs blur together in a rush of distortion and singalongs. The crowd often becomes as much a part of the performance as the band itself. Among the most anticipated stops is their Arizona date. Where the desert atmosphere will meet the band’s tightly coiled energy in what promises to be an explosive night. Phoenix audiences have long embraced high-intensity performances, and Joyce Manor’s emotionally charged catalog is tailor-made for that kind of collective release. This tour is poised as nostalgic and immediate. Phoenix has been humming in anticipation opening the door for the band's welcoming. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, it is an invitation to step into that familiar surge of melody and motion once again. The band will be in Phoenix, Arizona on March 9th at The Van Buren. If you’re not in the Phoenix area, do not fret. The tour is just kicking off. Be sure to check out the dates for a city near you. You can do that as well as purchase tickets here.

Plug In. Tune Out.

Sun-faded flyers stapled to telephone poles and late-night drives down Southern California streets with the windows cracked. A restless undercurrent. Melodies arrive fast and immediate. Hook-heavy, emotionally transparent, and gone before you can fully catch your breath.
