The UK’s biggest live rock and metal festival is set to return from 10 – 14 June. Download Festival 2026 at Castle Donington in Derbyshire is always an eclectic mix of sub-genres within the world of metal, rock and punk, and this year is no different. Kamran Haq and his booking team have put together a stellar lineup of more than 100 artists representing a wide cross section from the heavy music universe. Now that we have details of who is playing when, and on which stages, fans who have already bought tickets will be going through the usual process of figuring out how on earth they are going to see everyone they want to and who they are going to have to choose between.
Limp Bizkit kicks off this year’s headliners on the Friday night, returning for their fourth Download Festival– their first as headliners. After a huge performance in 2024, many people felt that the nu metal pioneers deserved their shot at headlining the festival and they haven’t wasted much time taking the top slot. Look out for possible new songs following their appearance on the Battlefield 6 soundtrack, amid old favourites from their extensive back catalogue like Break Stuff and Rollin’.
Guns N’ Roses have been big enough for long enough to have headlined this festival no less than four times (twice before it even became Download). It’s fair to say that most people will have a reasonable idea of what to expect from them, with a huge stash of rock anthems to call on. Perhaps the only question for them to answer is whether any of the new material that they are said to be working on will be ready in time for June. Debuting a couple of new songs during their Saturday night slot could be just what is needed to steal the show from their fellow headliners.
Whether you like the new lineup or not, Linkin Park are the biggest rock band in the world today by quite a margin. Currently, ranked 51 st worldwide on Spotify streams, this puts them 128 places higher than Metallica and 104 places higher than the Saturday headliners. Of course, rankings aren’t everything, but Download has unquestionably played a blinder in booking them this year. Linkin Park have headlined Download four times themselves, but this will be the first one since Emily Armstrong joined the band in 2024. A lot of their diehard fans have struggled to accept them in this new era, but Armstrong is herself a powerful stage presence and clearly fits with the sound the band want for themselves now. This is also the first time a female fronted band have headlined Download in its 23-year history and they will want to blow the roof off the Apex stage when they end the festival on Sunday evening.
In the main support slots and headlining the Opus stage, the organisers have gathered a hugely impressive array of bands who are arena-fillers in their own right. The depth and variety of the lineup this year is truly outstanding. There literally is something for everyone on every evening – from Cypress Hill on the Friday, to Trivium on Saturday and Bad Omens on Sunday, there simply isn’t a weak offering anywhere. It just keeps on giving – even the earlier slots are filled with bands who can and have sold out the largest UK arenas. Over on the Opus stage, Halestorm, Architects and A Day To Remember lead the lineup. None of these bands are far off headlining the main stage, so expect a louder than usual buffalo stampede between them finishing and the final acts starting on Apex. Daughtry, Behemoth and Mastodon bring the heavy in support, with the standout evening arguably being the Saturday when Behemoth support Architects. Get your loud pants on and come with me….
The smaller stages themselves have as much to offer in 2026 as they have at any time in recent Download history. Scheduling clashes will guarantee the usual debate about which bands are “must see”, but there really aren’t many, if any, weak slots this year. Highlights, as always, will be down to personal preference and it only goes to show (yet again) just how broad the heavy, rock and punk communities are.
Predictions are difficult to make, but expect to see some serious footfall when Feeder play the Avalanche stage on Friday, even with the potential for crossover with Limp Bizkit. After the success of Vengaboys on the Avalanche stage in 2025, it will be difficult to ignore the pull of Scooter on the same stage on Sunday. If you’re up early and feeling refreshed after an early night – or even if you aren’t – check out Silent Planet and Drowning Pool on the Opus stage on Friday and Saturday respectively, Native James on Friday on Avalanche, Tropic Gold on Saturday on the Dogtooth stage and Unpeople on the main stage on Sunday.
If you can’t make the whole festival, day tickets have just gone on sale. Travelling to Castle Donington is usually pretty easy, although getting out of carparks will no doubt take as long as it always does. Festival amenities and support services improve every year and it’s clear that this aspect remains massively important for the organisers. As always, the Download team will be out and about chatting to visitors and generally celebrating the “People of Download.” It’s part of the reason why Download is one of the most inclusive and friendly festivals of the year and why people return year on year.
The biggest question of all remains – blazing inferno or mud bath…??!!
