Festival goers will return to the rolling hills of Saint Charles, Iowa, as Hinterland 2026 brings together one of its most diverse lineups to date. Every summer, a stretch of rolling Iowa countryside transforms into one of the most beloved gathering places in independent music. In 2026, Hinterland appears poised to deliver its most exciting edition yet. Returning to Saint Charles, Iowa from July 30 through August 2, the four-day festival once again blends major headliners with emerging voices. The festival always creates a carefully curated experience that has become its hallmark. This year's lineup brings together an eclectic mix of artists spanning indie rock, folk, alternative pop, country, and experimental sounds. Led by KATSEYE on Thursday, Lorde on Friday, Mumford & Sons on Saturday, and Kali Uchis on Sunday.

What has always separated Hinterland from larger festival counterparts is its sense of place. Located just outside Des Moines, the festival unfolds among open fields and expansive Midwestern skies. Golden hour performances feel as memorable as the artists themselves bathed in a warming glow.

The setting encourages attendees to slow down, settle into the landscape, and experience music fully. The festival is built around connection. Between artists and audiences, strangers and friends, and songs and the memories they create.

This year's lineup reflects the evolving landscape of modern music. Thursday's opening night offers a youthful surge of energy through KATSEYE, beabadoobee, ASHNIKKO, Audrey Nuna, Jane Remover, and Frost Children. Friday leans into emotional resonance with Lorde, joined by MUNA, Snow Strippers, Paris Paloma, Sofia Isella, and Saint Avangeline. Saturday embraces folk traditions. Catharsis as Mumford & Sons headline a day that also features Jessie Murph, The Format, Santigold, CMAT, and Julia Wolf. The weekend closes with Kali Uchis, whose lush blend of soul, R&B, and Latin influences headlines a Sunday lineup featuring Young Miko, Wet Leg, Suki Waterhouse, Samia, Audrey Hobert, and Haute & Freddy.

As someone preparing to attend, what excites me most is the festival's unique ability of discovery. Hinterland has earned a reputation for introducing audiences to artists they may not have planned to see, only to have those performances become the highlight of the weekend. The festival's aesthetic feels dreamlike. Being part folk gathering, part indie glossed, part summer escape. Acoustic guitars drift across fields. Not before giving way to shimmering synths, alternative anthems, and pop choruses carried by thousands of voices singing in unison beneath a fading sunset.

More than a lineup, Hinterland offers an atmosphere. It is the feeling of hearing a favorite song carried by the evening breeze. It is the anticipation that builds as the sun lowers behind the stage. It is the understanding that for four days, music becomes the center of a temporary community built on shared experiences. With one of its strongest lineups to date and a setting unlike any other major festival in the country.
